Do you know why we celebrate Cinco De Mayo? It’s a common misconception that this day is the Mexican Independence day. However, that is actually September 16th! We celebrate May 5 around the world to join the Latino community in commemorating the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. While considered a minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States it has evolved into a major holiday to celebrate the Mexican culture and heritage in areas with large Mexican American populations.

- Nashville’s latino community is 65,000 strong and this year we want you to Nodat while you celebrate.
- Instead of tequila, the most popular drink in Mexico on Cinco De Mayo is actually Agua Fresco — flavored water combined with fruits, seeds, and flowers. Favorites include lime water, hibiscus-flavored water, and tamarind water.
- The most traditional Cinco De Mayo dish is not tacos? The most common dish served on Cinco De Mayo in Mexico is, Mole Poblano. A thick sauce made with green chiles — among many other ingredients — that is often served over turkey or chicken.
